A/A | Artist as Archivist

Artist as Archivist (A/A) project is a multidisciplinary residency platform that brings archival activism to the forefront by supporting women artists who are using social art practices to document social inequities and community histories in Miami. These artists use diverse experimental platforms to rectify silences and critical gaps that exist in the archival record. In the ‘artist as archivist’ paradigm, artists take on the task of memory work as a form of political & social activism and become agents of cultural empowerment.

Each artist received a grant to launch a project across the city of Miami. Artists documented their work and interactions with the community and created a digital exhibit for the WAAM platform. By supporting artists and providing them with microgrants, WAAM was able to ensure that both artists and community histories and memory are preserved.
