Artist and educator Karen Rifas was born in Chicago and currently lives and works in Miami, Florida. Karen studied at the Miami Dade College and subsequently continued her education at Florida International University where she received her BFA in 1985, followed by the University of Miami where she completed her MFA in 1988. She was an art educator at the Miami Dade College, University of Miami and at the New World School of Arts where she taught for over over twenty years.
The Karen Rifas: Defining Space collection includes exhibitions cards, brochures, catalogs, ephemera and other materials from Rifas’ work and life in the South Florida area that span over thirty years. The selections provide an insight both into the artist's experimentation with materiality and process but also offer a critical glimpse into the art activity of Miami's private and public cultural institutions.
The Karen Rifas collection includes printed material dating from the early 1980s to the present and includes exhibition announcements, flyers, brochures, photographs, postcards, sketches, installation shots, paint samples and catalogs.
